Dear Advocaters,

This issue of the HCV Advocate newsletter marks our 20th Anniversary issue!  To celebrate, Lucinda Porter and I are writing about what has sustained us over these past 20 years.  Please join us in celebrating our 20 years:

  • The Unsung Heroes of Hepatitis C — from the beginning of the epidemic, support groups have led the way in advocacy and support for the hepatitis C community.  Read my praise of these leaders who contributed so much to our community.
  • Celebrating 20 Years! — in my article, I discuss the beginnings of the Hepatitis C Support Project/HCV Advocate and the people who were responsible for our success throughout the years.
  • HealthWise — Lucinda Porter, RN discusses the success of HCSP/HCV Advocate and the people who made it successful.  Lucinda also discusses how people can get involved in HCV advocacy so we can eliminate hepatitis C.
  • Top Ten Stories of 2017 — this is my annual article on the top stories about hepatitis C from the previous year.  One important story cropped up that was not about hepatitis C.  Can you guess what it was?
  • Under The Umbrella — in his last article for the HCV Advocate newsletter titled A Year in the Life of a Trainer Matthew discusses his thoughts about being our trainer.
  • What’s Up
    • We have reviewed and updated the following Extrahepatic Manifestation Fact Sheets:
      • Fibromyalgia
      • Lichen Planus
      • Vitiligo
      • Raynaud’s Phenomenon
      • Membranoproliferative Glomerulonephritis
    • Don’t forget about PackHealth – it’s a valuable free personal health advisor service.

The staff of the HCSP/HCV Advocate wish you a happy and healthy 2018!

Dear Advocaters,

I don’t know about you but I can’t believe that 2018 is almost here!  Next year is the 20th anniversary of the HCV Advocate newsletter and we will have a special issue discussing our 20 years in hepatitis C (HCV) advocacy.

This month’s issue has information about 2017’s Liver Conference.  Lucinda and I write about the information that is not always covered in the national news media but we believe that it is important to our readers.   Matthew writes about recovery—a topic that is close to his heart.

Reports from 2017 The Liver Meeting

  • The Liver Meeting by Alan Franciscus:
    • HCV screening rates among baby boomers
    • A study on a marker that could lead to a condition called multiple myeloma
    • Part B of the Co-Star study abut reinfections rates among people who inject drugs
    • Identification of new subtypes and a new HCV genotype
    • Adherence rates to treatment and the effect of being cured of hepatitis C
    • Long-term follow-up on people with no or minimal fibrosis who were cured of hepatitis C – what is their disease progression and liver cancer rates?
  • The Liver Meeting by Lucinda Porter:
    • Curing hepatitis C (HCV) and reducing liver cancer
    • Curing HCV and improvements in quality of life among people with hepatitis C
    • Increase in liver cancer in patients without cirrhosis
    • Fatty Liver and heart disease
    • Men who have sex with men and acute HCV
    • Mislabeling of herbs and dietary supplements
    • Parkinson’s disease and hepatitis C medications
    • HCV treatment and the risk of heart disease
    • HCV positive livers transplanted to HCV negative recipients

Under the Umbrella by Matthew Zielske – One More Shot! Matthew delves into his own recovery and how we can change a person’s life by realizing their potential.

What’s Up!

We have updated and added the following HCSP Fact Sheets:

Extrahepatic Manifestations:

  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Peripheral Neuropathy
  • Mixed Cryoglobulinemia’s
