Jenny Heathcote graduated from the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine in the United Kingdom in 1968. After completing her training in internal medicine, she returned to the Royal Free to work with the late Professor Dame Sheila Sherlock – her MD thesis work was on the transmission of hepatitis B. She also conducted the first clinical therapeutic trial in PBC – using azathioprine. Her research interests have continued in these two areas of viral hepatitis and autoimmune liver disease in which she has published more than 200 papers. She has written a book on hepatitis C for patients. She was awarded the University of Toronto Clinician Teacher Award in 1995. She is an Associate Editor for Journal of Hepatology, Chair of the Publications Committee for Hepatology and Secretary of IASL.
