If you are a woman with HIV/HCV coinfection who is thinking about having a baby, there is important information that you need to know before you become pregnant. A woman who has HIV can become pregnant and have a healthy baby free of HIV. Transmitting HCV from a mother to child is uncommon, but can happen.
HIV and Hepatitis C are transmitted in similar ways. HIV is transmitted by blood and bodily fluids. The most common transmission route of HIV is from having sex with an HIV-positive person. HCV is transmitted by blood. The most common risk factor for getting hepatitis C (HCV) is from sharing HCV-infected needles and works (cookers, cottons, water, etc.).
